He's gone on offense

Our poor cat. Really, his life teeters on the thin line between well loved and SPCA report. Avery carries him, feeds him (forcefully), dresses him, and (attempts) to bathe him. This week he's taken a new approach. Offense.
If Avery gets within a 5 ft radius, he attacks. It's a swift little manuever followed by a dash to the highest object possible (to avoid retribution, I presume). Since it is summer, Avery has the battle wounds confirm this vicious little game.
T and I have discussed declawing the cat, but we feel claws are the one thing that keeps us on the well loved side of the thin line. We feel they are vital to the cats defense, but this new offense has really thrown us for a loop.
Suggestions?

J, He'd still have his back claws & honestly ~ my girl can use those with lethal accuracy when she really feels the need. It cuts down on those oh so painful "nicks" they give during petting times too. It is absolutely pathetic & sad to see them immediately after declawing - I would suggest letting him stay with someone a little less hands on in their loving while he's healing (but the same goes when he gets fixed too!) It really was the best thing we ever did with our cat.

Poor Avery...but then again, poor Thomas! ;) We own 3 cats; the 1st two were declawed when we got them, so when #3 joined us with claws we knew she would have to have them removed. I would probably vote for saying byebye to kitty's front claws...Thomas will learn to nip and use those back claws if Avery *loves* on her too much. :)

I noticed Thomas has been listed as he lately...isn't she a girl kitty cat? I know her (his?) name is Thomas O'Malley Cat, but I thought her/his gender was female!? Am I off base?
